SPRINGFIELD IL (8-14-08) - He's driven a Formula One car on five of seven continents, and in his brief stock car career he's raced on some of America's finest ovals. Nothing, however, can prepare Scott Speed for the dicey, dirty and dusty surfaces of the Midwest.

"I don't know that I have ever seen a dirt track, much less drove on one," Speed said. "I am very excited about trying it, and I hope to get at least a top-10 finish out of both races."

The first of "both" races is Sunday's ARCA RE/MAX Series event on the 1-mile dirt track at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. Then it's off to the dirt track in DuQuoin, Illinois on Sept. 1 before ARCA revisits asphalt.

Having never run on a dirt track, Speed is anxious to get practice under way Sunday morning. He has been receiving advice from veterans throughout the last few weeks, namely nine-time series champion Frank Kimmel.

"Frank has been helping me a lot with what I am supposed to do on the dirt tracks," Speed said, "so it should be quite interesting to say the least."

Coming off his fourth win of the year Saturday at Nashville Superspeedway, Speed owns a 140-point lead on Matt Carter in the championship standings. He leads the series in poles (three), wins (four), top fives (nine), top 10s (12) and laps led (344).

In between ARCA's two dirt races, Speed will return to the No. 22 Red Bull Toyota and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series to race at the oh-so-tough Bristol Motor Speedway on Aug. 20.

An 8th position for Scott lost him a few points from his championship lead yesterday because Stenhouse and Carter finished 2nd and 4th. Still he has a 110 point lead. Considering that it was his first time at a 'dirt' track. I think he did rather well (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

well scott finished 3rd with evil Stenhouse in second. Great comeback for Scott really who was a lap down with 5 to go and got lucky with a caution.

I am pretty sure he still leads the championship although with this series it is so very random with points that it is best to wait for the table to be updated.

I am hoping that he can win this championship esp now Kimi is flopping it gives me something to cheer on.

Who would have thought that I would need to turn to American motorsport to get entertainment LOL

I will post this, just to annoy Sam (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Speed to test for likely Cup debut

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/70429

Scott Speed is set to test a Sprint Cup car during an open session at Lowe's Motor Speedway later this month, in anticipation for what could be his debut at NASCAR's top level at the same track next month. The Red Bull racer will be driving the No. 82 Red Bull Toyota on September 23 and 24 at the mile-and-a-half oval, where all teams are expected to run in preparation for round 31 of the championship, the fifth race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Speed has already tested a Cup car at Nashville and Kentucky earlier this year, but this time he will do so alongside Red Bull's regular drivers and those he expects to be racing soon every weekend.

"I raced at Lowe's earlier this year in the Truck Series, so I'm in a good position totest the Sprint Cup car since I'm familiar with the track," Speed said. "The track itself is nice to drive on because the two corners are very different.

"Lowe's is a track that has character too. It's not a cookie cutter track so I enjoy racing on it a bit more than some of the others. It will be good to see where we stack up against everyone else, since there are so many good teams that will also be testing."

The former Scuderia Toro Rosso driver has been racing full-time in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, where he currently leads the points after winning four out of seventeen races contested thus far.

He also won at Dover earlier this year in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, where he has been runnning a partial schedule for Bill Davis Racing.

He has qualified 3rd, Ricky Stenhouse has qualified 1st so Scott's championship lead is now down to 40 points with 4 races left... He really could do with finishing ahead of Stenhouse today because it is getting a little bit close for comfort!

Live Timing here if anyone is remotely interested and wants to help cheer Scotty on for me ...

Race starts in 10 minutes
