Question - does an F1 driver have the right to ignore a 'box' call by his team and just stay out if he wants to? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

If it was me, I'd just do my own strategy as I thought best, and give the team one lap's warning before I came in. It's the team's job to service me, not mine to service them.

Of course he has that right, he is only obliged to pit if he is black-flagged. However, he should also know that the guys on the wall are privy to far more information about his competitors than he is and thus their decisions should be better, being better informed, than his.

An interesting parallel. in the TdF the cyclists are in radio contact with their support and thus know exactly where breakaway groups etc are. In the 'lympics road race, they do not have that information which makes it far harder to race tactically.

Button was criticizing Alonso yersterday saying he cannot be seen in the same light as Senna and Prost, where does Button stand then?

QUOTE (JMFangio @ Jul 29 2012, 03:22 PM) *

Here's what he actually said:

QUOTE
He’s not the only one in the field who you would say is a great. I wouldn’t compare him to other greats of the eighties. It was 20, 30 years ago. It’s a completely different sport now. They are completely different times. He is a great driver and very skilled at what he does. He’s not just fast, he’s a thinker as well. I wouldn’t put him in the same category as the old great drivers. I’d say you put him in with Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel.

The full quote isn't as damning as B&C's tabloid sensationalism.

Is that from this article?

QUOTE
BUTTON: FERNANDO ALONSO IS NOT IN THE SAME CLASS AS AYRTON SENNA AND ALAIN PROST

JENSON BUTTON has told championship leader Fernando Alonso that he cannot be ranked alongside greats such as Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

No offence to Hamilton, who did exactly what he had to, today, but he did not win this race by being the fastest driver today but by being the fastest driver yesterday.

This is the first really tedious race that we have had this season, even Monaco threw up more overtaking possibilities than this pathetic excuse for a race track.

That's exactly what I thought. LH's old man was on Sky after, waxing lyrical about how Lewis had controlled the race, dominated, etc etc. All I could think was that if it had been any other track bar Hungary (OK, maybe excluding Monaco too) he'd have been 2nd, perhaps 3rd. But nothing gets in the way of a Lewis-adulation-fest.

Yes, but it wasn't any other track than Hungary last Sunday.... it was Hungary. Lotus and Red Bull had the same chance for pole as McLaren - they weren't quick enough. McLaren engineers did the best job on the day.

As Kimi said, Lotus need to improve their qualifying pace. Same applies to every other team.

I realise that.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

I was saying that the raving about performance wasn't reflected in the pace on the day - Macca weren't the fastest car, didn't do the best job on strategy and LH wasn't the fastest driver during the race. Absolutely, they got the win (obviously...) but the admittedly biased view of Hamilton senior must have meant he was watching some other race, not the one I'd just seen.

you are being silly (IMG:style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif)
it is standard practice when Lewis wins for it to be his best ever win, a great drive, etc etc
when he loses its some other reason other than his ability
I am really surprised you haven't realized that by now (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

I think Lewis generally deserved the win on Sunday. He was the quickest driver for 90% of the weekend...

Yeah lewis loves mclaren for now. Just like he did immediately after canada. A poor showing at Spa and he'll probably start questioning them again
Oh, don't forget, he's still improving and getting stronger.

Even after that win the exchange between Lewis and Sam Michael was awkward.
